Certification Programs: An Overview
|
 |
Land
Certification Programs:
A minimum
of 258 hours of training is required for a Practitioner certificate in the land modalities. Our courses introduce concepts and skills that provide a foundation fundamental to all other forms of bodywork, and which are expanded upon in other classes. To become a proficient bodyworker, it is reasonable to estimate 558 to 1058 hours of training and at least one year of worth of practice. After completing 558 hours of
training, you receive a Massage Therapist or Shiatsu Therapist
certifcate. When you have completed 1058 hours, you receive an
Advanced Bodywork Therapist certificate.
Water Certification
Programs:
All of our Water Certification Programs
are overseen by the Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association
(WABA). WABA also sets the Watsu course and certificate
standards, and certifies the Watsu instructors and
assistants. The 320 hour Watsu Provider certificate is a
limited certificate. You cannot go into private practice with
it, but you can
provide Watsu sessions to clients at a spa,
clinic or sport club. The 588 hour
(and greater) programs allow you to have
a private practice as a waterworker. Note
that Watsu, Waterdance and Healing Dance are trademarked modalities,
so you must be certified in a specific modality before
you can advertise and provide the specific modality as a
service.
Licensing and
Government Certification Prior to registering for classes with
the School, students are encouraged to check with their local
state, city and/or county ordinances for licensing
requirements and the number of hours they require in bodywork
training in order to set up practice within these
areas.
Note to California Residents:
Our 258 hour programs allow you to apply for a California
Certified Massage Practitioner (California CMP). All of our 558 hour (and greater) programs allow you to apply for a California Certified Massage Therapist (California CMT). California certification is voluntary and is scheduled to accept applications beginning 9/1/2009. School Certificate Requirements
You can tailor most of our certificate courses to suit your interests, as long as you participate in all required classes and choose from our wide range of land and water electives. Note also that you can take a water class as an elective in some of our land certificate courses. To jump directly to the requirements for each certification course, you may click on the course names in the summary list above. To see descriptions of each course, you may click on the course name. Individual Classes
You do not have to decide on a
certificate program before you enroll in any class that
interests you. Many of the classes offered by the School of
Shiatsu and Massage can be taken individually for personal
growth, enrichment, to further enhance your career and to receive CE hours. All that is required of you is to observe the prerequisites that are listed under each specific class description as you dive in to the individual classes of your choice. Later, if you decide to pursue a certification program, applicable classes that you have already taken can be applied toward the certificate. Class Fees include tuition, indoor or
outdoor camping, organic meals and full Harbin access on the days that the class is in session. Class materials and applicable taxes are additional. Land Certification Courses

certified school required to practice massage, the standard
for entry level in the massage profession has become at
least a 500-hour certificate. Our 558 hour certificate
will allow you to apply for National Certification and
California State Certification. We offer two distinct paths: the Western approach with the Massage Therapist certificate, and the Eastern approach with the Shiatsu Therapist certificate.
